How to Estimate Yarn for C2C & Graphgan Blankets
The mathematics behind color-by-color yarn estimation
C2C Yarn Consumption Mathematical Formulas
Estimating multi-color pixel crochet requires exact stitch geometry rather than vague guesses. AeternaCraft's C2C Yardage Model calculates yardage, grams, and balls per color with the following empirical equations:
Yards = [ (N_blocks × L_block × T_tension) ÷ 36 ] × (1 + β_safety) Grams = Yards ÷ (Standard Yards per Gram) Balls = Ceiling(Yards ÷ Skein Yardage) Every stitch type consumes a predictable length of yarn. A standard C2C block (chain 3 + 3 double crochets) consumes about 23.5 inches of worsted weight yarn, whereas a single crochet tapestry stitch uses about 3.6 inches.
Unlike solid blankets, multi-color graphgans require fastening off, weaving in ends, or carrying yarn. Adding a 15% to 20% safety margin protects you against dye lot shortages mid-row.
Yarn is sold in whole balls. If your background requires 210 yards and each skein has 200 yards, you must purchase 2 balls to avoid running out before finishing the borders.
